I belong to HeartsSpeak, an organization that encourages photographers to help shelter pets find their new homes by having the animals become visible through imagery. On July 13, HeartsSpeak, Los Angeles County Animal Care Centers, Rita Earl Photography and Shelter Me embarked on a unique collaboration called Seen=Saved Los Angeles that enabled every single adoptable animal in the LA County shelters to be photographed by 200 photographers. And for that weekend, adoption fees were waived!I immediately signed up when it was announced, I was so excited. I've photographed many adoptable animals in the past and my hope, along with everyone else's hope, is that the images would help these animals ...

Another Cat Calendar
Friday, November 23, 2018

It's been four years since I last did my all-cat calendar but we have another one for 2019! But it's a personal calendar, one designed for cat brothers Vincent and Winston. Their mom Monica had outfits for every month for them. These boys were great. Well, Vincent didn't love outfits... he usually only had one expression... but he put up with it, which, truth be told, kind of astonished me. As the caretaker of my two cat boys, they don't like to dress up that much. Well, not at all. But these guys went through all 12 months.I would photograph one of them first, usually Winston, the gray boy, and then Vincent. And in Photoshop I would put the two of them together in appropriate settings. I ...

Phoebe Lost at Sea on Exhibit at Bergamot Station
Tuesday, July 18, 2017

So I am a longtime member of the Los Angeles Center of Photography where back in the day I took a lot of classes, particularly when it was the Julia Dean Photography Workshops. There, yours truly took many classes in lighting, both strobe and flash, and headshots, among others. These classes laid the foundation for the mild-mannered pet photographer I am today. The LACP has exhibitions annually for its members. You know, I thought it was maybe 50-75 photographers, not very competitive, but boy, was I ever wrong.I entered the fourth annual exhibition with five of my composites that you see on this site: Phoebe, the Frenchie, adrift; the Library; the Birth of Luna; the Aviator; and Kiwi ...

Hobo Joe's First Kitty Photo Shoot
Wednesday, July 12, 2017

So my client Lizzie fosters kittens. She has fostered a lot of them, giving them a great shot at life. But she just had a foster fail. Hobo Joe, the smoky gray kitten. Something about Hobo Joe melted Lizzie and her husband Ryan's heart and before you could say "meow," Hobo Joe was theirs. They had two cats but one recently passed away so they had a permanent vacancy in the household. We had a great kitten shoot. Hobo Joe was just so tiny. He was only six or seven weeks old when we had his photography session. And you know kittens... so adorable. For me as a pet photographer, my hierarchy in terms of photographing dogs and cats is: 1) dogs are easiest 2) kittens are next easiest 3) then cats ...

New Backdrops for Vanity Fair Style Pet Portraits!
Friday, April 14, 2017

You guys, you guys, you guys! I'm so excited, can you tell?! We just got in three new hand-painted canvas backdrops. What does that mean? Vanity Fair/Annie Leibovitz styled pet portraits! The colors are brown, blue and green and they are completely awesome. No, these are not your daddy's Old World Masters backdrops. These are very contemporary and make for extremely dramatic portraits. They really fit well in a styled shoot or a formal portrait. They are made by Gravity Backdrops and they came all the way from Serbia. Now, for this kind of look, I have photographed on gray or dark blue seamless paper and added on a texture and it kind of mimics it. But the seamless doesn't have the depth the ...
